Fritz Erler (1913-1967) was a German politician and member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He was a key figure in the party’s youth movement and rose to become a senior party official. Erler was also a member of the German Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, from 1953 until his death in 1967. He was known for his progressive views and played a leading role in the area of social policy. In the 1960s, Erler was a vocal critic of the Vietnam War and played a key role in the emergence of the “New Left” in West Germany. He died of a heart attack at the age of 53. Today, Erler is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of the SPD and in the postwar political landscape of Germany.
